The reason why POP access was created was to allow users to download email without leaving it on the server (which is why old email programs used to do that by default). I think it’s still awful that you have to pay for POP access.
Yahoo should leverage their Microsoft partnership (whatever remains of it) and just get to host all of their email accounts.

You still get the benefit of ’s ActiveSync support (albeit with a longer update delay), and your calendar and contacts can sync between devices. Here’s my advice: set up a Microsoft account (you can set it up with any email address as a username, like your Yahoo or ISP account, and a mailbox will be created for it too) and get to pull the mail from Yahoo’s server – then you don’t have to deal with Yahoo. I really think Yahoo only exists to push people onto their webmail system just so they can justify their ad revenue.

All of the partner ISP’s suffer these same problems.Īlso, even though the Windows 8 Mail App doesn’t support folder management (creating or deleting – but you can still put message in pre-created folders), Yahoo’s own app doesn’t even support that either – ON THEIR OWN SYSTEM!
They won’t let you set up the Windows 8 Mail App to check for new mail more than once every 30 minutes because it’ll drop repetitive connections. What’s worse is that their IMAP server drops the connection if you try to do too much (navigate between folders, delete a bunch of messages, etc.) during a 30 minute stretch. Yahoo doesn’t support POP (not that anybody would want to use it in this day and age), and IMAP support doesn’t even work that well even with that shiny new server to make their system support the Windows 8 Mail App (it’s called .com, in case you didn’t know). Fortunately I can email out one of my other email accounts but man, when some unknown thing somewhere has some setting and you can’t do a thing about it other than wait it out, it’s not fun. Lesson three is – Patience is definitely not my strong point. Lesson two is – yes I know by now you’ll say dump – but I take pride in having an email address that after all of these years on the web you can still reach me So lesson one is – be very careful as to what email account you use to relay out event messages on servers in case they screw up. So how about someone up there shut the stupid thing off and have some better resolution other than ‘you’ll have to wait 48 hours’. It’s probably been more than 48 hours and I’m still getting messages that I can’t email. When I called them they said I had to wait 48 hours for the account to be cleared up. And as a result since about Wednesday they’ve locked down my ability to send -any- email out my account. So when these alerts went berserk on me sending out a bunch of emails, PacBell flagged my sending of emails to myself as being a spammer. So I had stupidly had these alerts relaying out my smtp account so as to not rely on any Exchange server. What does this have to do with my address? I’m getting to that. But last weekend the database of alerts kinda freaked out and send out a ton of alerts.

Now normally this info is extremely helpful when I patch as it lets me monitor what is going on. I had installed a new event monitoring service ( on one server and hadn’t updated the service on another and last weekend was my “patch” weekend at the office and for whatever reason my normally trusty service decided to send out alerts every hour on the hour of nearly everything that has ever been uninstalled or installed on the server. Yes, I know I did something really dumb last weekend.
